Brooklyn Dodgers - 1924 PBC Series Champions

Image

It could be called ironic, or fateful, or just a sad coincidence. The winning run in the exciting seventh game of the championship series came on a wild pitch thrown by a man whose nickname is Sloppy. It doesn't matter that the pitcher inherited his nickname from his father who dispensed soup to the poor. It doesn't matter that Fargo had two base running errors. It doesn't even matter that Thurston pitched an otherwise excellent nine innings. At the end of the day ball fans from both Brooklyn and Fargo will remember that the winning run was from a bad pitch from a guy named Sloppy.

Brooklyn Not Concerned with Odds

Fargo, ND. Aug 10, 1924 - The Brooklyn Dodgers arrived into town last night seemingly ignorant of the fact that no one expects them to have a chance in the seven game series against Fargo. The group, relaxed and a little rubber legged from the journey, were led in song by Game 1 starter Howard Ehmke.

"No one thought we could beat Brockton but we made quick work of them," Ehmke said to the reporters gathered. The next morning he was still confident: "We took 5 out 12 from them in the season and we would have taken more if my arm didn't give out on opening day. I'm healthy and we're ready to go."

Former Cincinnati Red's star Edd Roush agreed with Ehmke. "Walter Johnson is a great pitcher but you folks in the press make him sound unbeatable. He lost one third of his starts this season because he is only one man on a team. We're team players and Fargo has not been able to do that all season."

The seven game championship series starts tomorrow.

In Brooklyn
The Brooklyn Dodgers clinched the fourth game of the series without drama. The heavily favoured Brockton Buglers collapsed without a fight losing the game 7 to 1. Much was expected from Bugler franchise player Babe Ruth, but the Sultan of Swat went 0 or 4 making many wonder if he is capable of handling the stress of the post-season. Brooklyn goes on to play Fargo in the finals while Brockton begins the task of deciding who receives their unconditional release.

In Rye
The visiting Fargo Milkrunners launched a ninth inning comeback to win a thrilling tenth inning victory in front of a shocked home crowd at Deete Meadow. The Ghosts were only two outs away from forcing a decisive fifth game back at Fargo when Milkrunner DH and Negro League veteran Bullet Rogan hit a single up the centre. Two batters later centrefielder Cy Williams hit a 2-0 pitch for a homerun evening the score.

In the bottom of the ninth the Rye famed "Triple H" line came to bat. With one out Harry Hooper hit a double putting the winning run on second base. All-Star Gabby Harnett was then called out on strikes. The catcher took offense to the judges decision and after a heated argument was thrown out of the game. Batting title winner Rogers Hornsby then came to bat but was given the free pass. Earl Sheely stranded Hooper with a pop-out to the infield.

In the top of the tenth Fargo pinch hitter Eddie Brown, the 32 year old veteran who had no at bats in the regular season, manufactured a run by hitting a single, stealing second and then moving to third on a ground ball. He was scored on the sac fly by Johnny Mostil and that was all the Milkrunners needed.
