Larry Nelson WWII Photos

Photographs 0001 to 0010

PHOTO 0001:An Unknown Aerial.
This countryside photo is a mystery.   Nelson took a number of pre- and post- bombing raid photos.  This could be one of those, or a simple photo of the English countryside.

Does anybody know where this is?

PHOTO 0002:D-DAY +1 Aerial.
This aerial photo was taken June 7th 1944...one day after D-Day.  Notice the notes on the bottom of the photo.

UPDATE  Feb 11th 2001:  Ian Daglish has identified this exact location:  East bank of the Orne River just north of the town of Ranville, and is approximately one quarter of a mile north of Pegasus Bridge.  Click on the photo to see details.

PHOTO 0003:  Winston Churchill #1.
Just one of the photos Nelson took of Churchill.  The notes on the back of the photo meant something to Nelson at one time.
This photo appeared in Nelson's home town paper, the North Bay Nugget, on November 11, 1975 (along with Photos 0022, 0025, 0028) in a special Remembrance Day memorial.

Any idea on the notes in the back?

PHOTO 0004:  Crossing the Rhine
Trudy Nelson (Larry's wife) has explained that she believes this photo was taken by Nelson as he crossed the Rhine in a jeep.

UPDATE  Feb 11th 2001:  Ian Daglish has verified this is a Rhine crossing.  Click on photo to see details.
UPDATE  Feb 5th 2001:  We've added a photo which is a blow up of the signs to the left.

PHOTO 0005:  Crossing the Seine
Another river crossing.  Nelson wrote on the back of this photo a word that begins with Sei...the rest has been damaged.  This most probably refers to the Seine, as other similar photos have the note "Seine" on the back.

UPDATE  Feb 11th 2001:  Ian Daglish has identified the exact location of this Seine crossing.  Click on photo to see details.

PHOTO 0006:  The "Gang" in England.
This photo of "Skip" Nelson and his comrades in England.  Skip was just one of Nelson's nicknames over the course of the war.  Trudy remembers Nelson being known as Blackie, while at least one other photo in the archives refers to him as Omar.

Does anyone have any news on any the people in the photo?

PHOTO 0007:  Captured Photo - German Heinkel He60
This German photo was included in Nelson's archives.  The interesting thing about this particular photo is that it has a German stamp on the back...showing it was more than just film found in a German camera.

UPDATE  Feb 5th 2001:  We have received an email from Peter Ladwein who has translated the German stamp and explained the significance of the German city Travemünde stamped on the back.  Click on photo to see details.
UPDATE  Feb 5th 2001:  Thomas Laven emailed us from Germany.  He has identified the plane as a Heinkel He60.  Click on the photo to see details.

PHOTO 0008:  German Funeral
A swatiska draped coffin.  We do not know who is present in the photo..or where it was taken.  Is this a captured photo or a German being buried in Allied territory?

Does anyone have any information on this photo?
UPDATE   Feb 5th 2001:  Larry's son Terry believes this photo was taken on Allied soil, although he cannot recall being told the circumstances.  We have added a blown up image of the soldiers.  Perhaps someone will recognize a relative or the uniforms.

PHOTO 0009:  Monty and the King
Field Marshall Montgomery and H.R.H. King George VI.  The note on the back of the photo says:  "Eindhoven October."  I believe this is October 1944...one month after Monty's gamble to take Arnhem (in the Netherlands) failed (as portrayed in A Bridge Too Far).  Nelson's archive includes a brown piece of paper with orders to drive to Eindhoven (including directions).

Larry "Skip" Nelson and Fred.  The back of the photo has a note home to his wife Trudy with an explanation of the new nickname.

Does anyone have any news on Fred?
UPDATE Feb 5th 2001:  Larry's son Tim has found a second photo with the same Fred.  On it is written the name Fred Taylor of London, England.  If anyone knows of Fred or his relatives please let us know.
