Photographs 0021 to 0030

PHOTO 0022:  German Parade.
German soldiers with drums and flutes.  Are these POWs?
This photo appeared in Nelson's home town paper, the North Bay Nugget, on November 11, 1975 (along with Photos 0003, 0025, 0028) in a special Remembrance Day memorial.

UPDATE Feb 25th, 2001:  Larry's son Terry believes these may be POWs (remembering from a discussion long ago).
Can anyone provide any insight into the soldiers or location?

PHOTO 0023:  D-DAY +1.  Another Post-D-Day photo (like #0002).
Another aerial photo taken June 7th, 1944 (see Photo 0002).

UPDATE Mar 7th, 2001:  We've just posted an email we received from IAN DAGLISH on Feb 26th.  His findings corroborate David Olie's email from the 25th.  Click on the photo to see details.

UPDATE Feb 25th, 2001:  DAVID OLIE has emailed us explaining that this is Ranville Bridge over the Orne river.  See his comments by clicking on the image.

PHOTO 0024:  German Plane: Heinkel He115
Another German plane.  Nelson liked 'kites', as he called them.  He took plenty of photos and collected many others.  This beautiful plane is much larger than it might first look.   Notice the ladder on the right of the pontoon and you can get a sense of its true size.
UPDATE Feb25th, 2001:  Our regular experts in the field of German aircraft, Thomas Laven and Bryan Brinkman,
have written to us explaining this seafaring plane is a Heinkel He 115.  Click on the image to see details.

PHOTO 0025:  Monty and the King in Eindhoven (like Photo #0009)
Another photo of King George VI and Monty in Eindhoven.
This photo appeared in Nelson's home town paper, the North Bay Nugget, on November 11, 1975 (along with Photos 0003, 0022, 0028) in a special Remembrance Day memorial.

UPDATE Feb25th, 2001:  Larry's wife, Trudy, has written with information on the driver of the jeep.  He was a young man from Toronto who died in Hurrican Hazel.

Can anyone help with information on a Royal visit to Eindhoven in Oct/Nov '44.

PHOTOS 0026:  Forward Units.
Photo 0026 is labelled 'B' Flt/9-8-44.  The back has the note "Forward Units B8" or "B:". Does this represent a Sept 8th recon...or perhaps Aug 9th?

Can anyone provide any insight or educated suggestions with respect to this photo?

PHOTO 0027: Crossing the Lower Rhine (Lek) at Vianen
We have learned this is a bridge crossing the Lower Rhine (or Lek) at Vianen (11km south of Utrecht).

UPDATE Mar 18th, 2001: MART Van De WEGE posted an email on the Dutch history newsgroup nl.geschiedenis looking for help with this photo.  KEES LESEMAN identified the bridge as crossing the Lower Rhine at Vianen.  EMILE MEGENS then wrote to us with a full history of the bridge.  Click on the photo to see all the details (including photos and a full history!)

PHOTO 0028: Bombed German Plane
Originally labelled a crashed German plane...a number of people have written explaining the error of my ways.  This plane was most probably bombed sitting in its hangar.  See the updates below.
This photo appeared in Nelson's home town paper, the North Bay Nugget, on November 11, 1975 (along with Photos 0003, 0022, 0025) in a special Remembrance Day memorial.

UPDATE Mar 7th, 2001:  JES TOUVDAL has written from Denmark with some more insight into this photo.  Click on the photo to see his email.

UPDATE Feb 25th, 2001:   A number of people wrote explaining that the plane in photo #0028 was most probably not a crash.  The exact model of plane is not entirely agreed upon, but the thinking is close.  Click on the photo to see the emails we received.

PHOTO 0029:  Larry (No clean shirt)
It is hard to keep yourself polished in a war, as Larry explained in a small note to his wife on the back of this photo.

PHOTO 0030:  Christmas in Holland (1944).
This photo comes with the note "Christmas Night in Holland" written on the back.  The bottom is signed by Randolph Macdonald - a fellow war photographer and friend.  The photo shows Larry (on the left) with another friend, artist Johnnie Morrow, enjoying a quieter moment in 1944.  The three were good friends and spent most of the war together.  Nelson's archive includes photos of some of Morrow's work.

Notice the photo pinned to the wall beside the map (on the left of this image).  It is Photo 0003 (of Winston Churchill).
